BCALA Joins ALA and Other Information Organizations in Speaking Out Against Recent Presidential Actions and Policies

The Black Caucus of the American Library Association, Inc. (BCALA) expresses strong opposition to the recent executive orders and other actions of the Trump Administration that seek to limit access to information and that specifically target refugees and immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries for discrimination.

Born out of the civil and human rights movements, BCALA has a strong tradition of speaking out forcefully against discrimination and acting to fight racism. Our organization supports and advocates for equitable and sustainable access to information, values human rights, inclusiveness, integrity, and transparency and actively works to address issues of social justice and equality.

As an organizational affiliate of the American Library Association (ALA), BCALA stands with the ALA leadership and others who have voiced opposition to the new administration actions and policies and will resist any efforts to target and exploit communities, to strip individuals of their fundamental rights, and use rhetoric and policies that divide people of all races, creeds and cultures.

Established in 1970, BCALA is a registered nonprofit organization with 501(c)3 IRS status.  All donations to BCALA are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law and support our mission.  BCALA serves as advocate for the development, promotion, and improvement of library services and resources to the nation’s African American community; and provides leadership for the recruitment and professional development of African American librarians.   For more information, please visit
